Hi🥰 Is it possible to have more glimpses at Colt and Parker’s relationship? As in, headcanons (I don’t know if that’s the name) of them being siblings, they are so funny and sweet💘💞
I tried to answer this a bit in the last chapter by giving us some more insight into their relationship.
It's definitely the bickering-type of love that they have. They could suck all the oxygen out of a room just arguing about whether the sky is a soft blue or a dark blue, and on more than one occasion, Dan has just left the room altogether when they get on a tangent. But if anyone were to ever ask them to stop, they quite literally wouldn't understand, because they're having the time of their lives debating stupid stuff, and pointless arguments is practically their love language.
It's funny too because they could argue all day, calling each other stupid and dumb and idiotic, but the moment someone else joins the conversation to call them that, it's like—woah, hold on, what did you just say? Parker can bash on Colt all she wants, but no one else is given that privilege. And Colt can whine all night about how annoying his sister is, but if one of his friends ever suggests that he stop hanging out with her, he would be so offended on her behalf that he would probably just leave. They're protective like that; they have a bubble no one else really understands, and that's just the way it is.
I also like to imagine that their mom is so used to their behavior that family holidays are Parker/Colt arguing across the dining room table, yelling, smacking each other, wrestling on the floor, and their mom quite literally doesn't bat an eye. She's just baking, minding her business, asking them how work is going and this and that—to which they always take a moment to pause in what they're doing to answer her (mom always gets an answer) before going right back at it. There's been more than one conversation where Parker is stuck in a headlock, trying to get out, while Colt calmly listens to his mom tell a story she heard from someone at work. They only time she tells them to knock it off is when they break something; though, when this happens, they very quickly become Team Dumb & Dumber as they try to hide the evidence before she finds it.
Cuz, you know, snitches get stitches.
The only exception to this rule is when Parker tells her mom about Colt's latest girlfriend—so she can watch her brother sit through question after question, pink faced and annoyed at the dinner table, blustering at the mention of marriage and children—as well as when Colt tells their mom the newest story of Parker getting drunk at the bar because she always tsks and tuts in disapproval—"that's just not how ladies should act, Parker Ann"—as he smugly watches from the living room couch.
It's stupid, idiotic, childish, and dumb. But that's just them.
Kids in adult bodies, protecting one another from the playground bullies before shoving each other off the swings.
Jody thinks it's hilarious, Tom thinks its envious.

The Umbrella Academy OC Introduction
Cause I said I was gonna introduce him and forgot so this is my Umbrella Academy oc that I made after the first season and I have not seen past a few episodes of 3 and I will not (tagging @daughter-of-melpomene )
Drake Seaver (Henry Golding FC), Klaus Hargreeves ship. October 1, 1989, forty-three women that were not pregnant when the day started somehow gave birth to forty-three children. Drake was one of them. However, his mother saw his birth as a gift, a blessing even, and refused to hand her child over to Reginald. So Drake got to live with his mother, and when he was 4, his powers started developing. The ability to manipulate ice. She made him promise to keep his powers a secret, at least until she married when he was 6, and he got a new father and a sister. Other than the occasional ice blast, his life was fairly normal. Then he grew up, became an actor, moved to Hollywood where he befriended Allison Hargreeves, former famed child superhero turned actress. And when her father dies, he offers to be her moral support and go with her. Who knew that would involve having to stop the Apocalypse with a group of dysfunctional siblings?

Casting Call!
I am casting for an online reading of my play Resting Place. You don't have to have ever acted before. You don't have to memorize lines since it's a reading, either.
Resting Place is a family drama centering around the Servers, a fractured family still orbiting around the Furever Friends Pet Funeral Home, and the dying matriarch Joanne. The eldest sibling has come home for the first time in seven years after hearing of her mother's deteriorating condition. Tensions are high and there are long murmuring secrets reaching out to be heard.
You can read Resting Place here.
Parts I'm Still Casting
Joanne Seaver: mother of the Seaver family. Dying of late stage cancer. Charming. Intelligent. Loves her children. Knows she's ruining her children. Figures it's too late to stop it.
Marigold Seaver: eldest child. The longtime confidant for her emotionally codependent mother. Escaped to survive. Not sure whether or not to regret it.
Fisher Seaver: middle child. Stayed back with his youngest sibling Lenore to run the family business and take care of their mom. Nurses a high most of the time. Outwardly good natured, but there might be something else there.
I wrote Fisher masc and Marigold femme, but I'm open to different interpretations. I am pretty sold on Joanne being an older-leaning woman, but like I said - I am able to be convinced.
This is an opportunity open to all experience levels and any age where you are able to take part in a performance on Zoom. If a younger person wants to I can provide more professional qualifications as a person who's directed all ages in a theatrical setting.
I do not think there will be financial compensation for any of us. I plan to do a pay-what-you-can thing, and any funds made will be divided entirely across the cast - myself excluded if I end up reading stage directions. I don't see it being much?
We will probably have like two or zoom or discord calls before the performance where we workshop the script. I plan to set the dates among the cast. The performance would be sometime later this year.
If you are interested, please reach out with the part that sounds appealing to you! Even if you have an entirely different take on the character. I'll send you the sides, you'll send me a recording of you doing the sides, and we'll go from there!

I think the reason they never explicitly labeled Reid as autistic is because everyone but a select few gang up on him and bully him for certain traits of his and the writers kind of know in the back of their minds ableist bullying is Bad and makes them all look like assholes but the entire world thinks "normal" bullying (🙄🙄🙄) is "just fine because it builds character" (🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄), therefore, "pfffft Reid's not autistic, he's just a little silly".
Also, I think for Ashley Seaver, they specifically hired a pretty blonde with blue eyes and wrote a scene where she was mean to him and then later tried to make Reid/Seaver A Thing because that was the only way we could "have" Jeid without actually having Jeid and it just didn't work because they were too lazy and bad at their job to have Ashley be her own character with a personality beyond her daddy issues (shhhhh Ashley bby come to me I can write you better than that) and also Jeid doesn't work because she treats him like an irritating younger sibling plus the mommy thing from Reid's birthday in s1 and Cat bringing up the mom thing again in s15 were Gross and Bad and I Didn't Like Them.

Hi I don’t know if you are still taking requests for JJ/Will, but if you are can you write a one-shot about if JJ didn’t have the miscarriage? Thanks ☺️
I love writing JJ/Will, getting requests for them makes me so happy, you have no idea.
Warnings: Canon typical violence, guns/shooting is mentioned in relation to their case in the beginning, throwing up/morning sickness, other pregnancy related things.
I hope you enjoy this. I used a timeline on the wiki to try and calculate when she would have been pregnant during her time overseas, but i could be off. Also, on the wiki if you look at Will's family it says "Maggie LaMontagne (Unborn daughter)" And I'm not sure who decided that, but I used a different name for the baby because I couldn't find anywhere else that said that was supposed to be her name, but I can change it if I find proof that's true.
summary: JJ doesn't go on her overseas assignment
Read on AO3
or
Full Story under the cut
Their case was in Tampa, it hadn't been long since Prentiss had... Everyone was still pretty raw and JJ hated that she had to keep what she knew from her coworkers. It had really been taking a toll on her, and even she was grieving. She knew Prentiss was still alive and well, but she couldn't talk to her or anything... It was hard, but she knew it was harder for the others, the ones who thought Prentiss was dead. JJ was shaken from her thoughts as the phone rang. Spencer, Morgan, Seaver, and herself were seated around a table in the Tampa Police station. Spencer answered the call and put Hotch and Rossi on speaker.
"She had access to ammo for a .38, but not to a gun." Hotch spoke,
"She most likely lives with someone who is into guns, but doesn't allow her access." Spencer started, Morgan continued to conversation, but JJ didn't hear what he was saying because she felt saliva coat the inside of her mouth and the familiar feeling in her stomach. She excused herself and made a beeline to the women's restroom. As soon as she was in front of the toilet she began throwing up. Her throat burned as everything she had eaten that morning made a reappearance. It hadn't been much, but it was more than the saltine crackers she would typically limit herself to in these times. She sat back against the stall and sighed. She knew she would have to tell the team soon, but she hadn't even had a chance to sit down and tell Will yet. She only just found out right after everything happened with Emily and since then she's been on cases... JJ sighed and stood up from the bathroom floor. She flushed the toilet and went to clean up.
---
It wasn't too long before they identified the woman and had tracked her to a local restaurant called 'Sir Burger'. They had the place surrounded but she wasn't giving up. While the others were dealing with the active hostage situation, JJ was trying, with the help of a couple officers, to keep the media at bay. But all she could think of was that little boy. She understood why their suspect was upset, JJ also thought about her own little boy. She kept a straight face for the cameras that surrounded her, but inside she just felt like crying.
Soon, Hotch was able to calm the woman down and coax the gun from her. JJ watched as she was put into a police car and driven away. She couldn't help but feel bad for the woman, all she wanted was her son back.. JJ pulled her phone from her pocket and looked at the photo of Henry that was her lock screen.
---
JJ entered the home that she and Will shared. She sat her go bag down in the entry way and kicked off her shoes,
"Will?" She called quietly, in case Henry was asleep. She rounded the corner into the living room to find her husband asleep on the couch with her son asleep on his chest. She couldn't help but smile at the sight. She rested her hand over her stomach. Soon, Henry would have a new sibling and she couldn't be happier. She moved closer to the two and slowly lifted the boy who was still practically a baby. He was a little over a year old now. As she lifted him, Will opened his eyes and blinked at her a few times,
"JJ?" He murmured. JJ rested Henry's head on her shoulder,
"Yeah, its me." She whispered. He smiled and pushed himself into a sitting position,
"What time is it?" He asked. JJ glanced at the clock,
"About 1:30 am." She said, "Why don't you go get in bed?" She said, Will nodded and stood up. He kissed her and then Henry and made his way to their bedroom. JJ carried Henry to his crib and laid him down. The boy stirred slightly, but he fell asleep. JJ watched him sleep for a few minutes before making her way to the bedroom. Will was brushing his teeth when she entered the bedroom,
"How did it go in Tampa?" Will called from the master bathroom. JJ began to take off her skirt and blouse to change into some pajamas. JJ considered the question for a minute,
"About as well as you'd expect. We got our unsub, but she killed so many people and scared a lot more..." JJ said, she thought back to the mall. There had been so many kids there, luckily none of them got hurt. JJ relaxed into the bed as Will slid in beside her,
"Do you want to talk about it?" He asked, he knew that sometimes that helped, but other times JJ just wanted to forget about the cases. JJ shook her head,
"No, no  I want to talk about something else actually." She said. Will raised his eyebrows,
"Oh?" JJ nodded. She bit her lip,
"Henry is going to be a big brother." She said, a smile breaking out on her face, Will's eyes widened as he looked at her,
"Oh my god, JJ, thats amazing." He said, pulling his wife into a hug. She hugged him back and melted into his arms,
"I know, I'm so excited." She said, "I found out a couple weeks ago and I just couldn't find the right time to tell you with both of us working so much... But We're gonna have another baby." She said. Will smiled,
"When's the first ultrasound?" Will asked,
"I have an appointment next Thursday." She said, Will smiled and kissed her, JJ kissed him back, resting her hands on his stubble-covered chin.
"We'll go together." He said once they pulled away. JJ nodded.
---
It was another month or so before she decided to tell the team. They had been called for an early meeting and Hotch informed them that they may be contacted by other division because of budget cuts. As soon as he finished his sentence, his phone rang.
"Virginia state police believe they may have uncovered a serial killer." He spoke, "Dave you and Morgan head to the crime scene." the two nodded, but before they could move, JJ spoke up,
"Really fast..." She started, "I have some happier news for you guys." Everyone looked at her, but Spencer was the first one to realize,
"I'm getting another godson?" He said, smiling widely, JJ smile,
"It could be a god daughter." She said. Everyone smiled and congratulated JJ before heading to their assignments.
---
JJ's pregnancy had went healthy. They soon found out that they were going to have a baby girl and everyone was excited. The team held a little baby shower for her, Garcia had already bought a ton of outfits for the little girl and many different sizes. Everyone was so excited to welcome her.
It was November, the team had been sent to Kansas for a case and JJ was due within the week. She had decided to stay back for that very reason, then Henry got sick. He had ran a fever all day, but by the night he had broken the fever, JJ assumed the ibuprofen had helped. But the next morning while he was having breakfast, JJ and Will both felt that something was off. JJ sat Henry's pancakes in front of him, but he didn't dig in like he usually would. Henry was staring off, and that wasn't normal for him. JJ looked a her husband,
"Something is going on, Will..." She said and as soon as she did she noticed the small boy start to shake slightly, JJ's eyes widened and she and Will both jumped into action. JJ pulled the tray off his highchair and Will eased the kid to the floor, supporting his head as he seized.
"I'm calling an ambulance."  JJ said, pulling out her phone. A few minutes later, paramedics were loading her son into the ambulance. Will rode with them as JJ drove behind. That was when the first contraction happened. She'd been having false contractions for a few days, but this one felt different and she knew this one meant it was time, but she pushed the thought from her head. 'Henry needs me.' she told herself.
---
JJ and Will sat together in the hospital room. They were told that seizures like this were common for kids his age, so they were going to be released shortly. JJ's contractions were getting closer together, but she had continued to hide them. But Will had noticed. Henry had moved to sit against JJ, his head was laying on her bump. JJ felt another contraction and she bit her lip and took some breaths, Will lifted Henry off of her and smiled,
"I guess we should head over to the maternity ward next?" He said. JJ blushed, "How far apart are they?" He asked.
"They're, uh, every 5 minutes now..." She admitted. Will smiled,
"Okay, I'll call Henry's sitter." He said, pulling out his phone as the doctor entered with Henry's release papers. JJ listened to the man as he gave them release instructions and then the small family made their way to the maternity part of the hospital.
___
Lucy Roslyn LaMontagne was born a few hours after JJ was admitted. She was a beautiful baby girl with a head full of blonde hair, just like her mom and her older brother. The couple were both so exhausted, but so happy. Soon, Henry was brought in to meet his new sister and when the team got back into town, they all crowded in to meet the new LaMontagne baby. JJ just wished Emily could be there to see the beautiful baby.

Jonas Corbin’s backstory
Jonas Richard Corbin: -Born in Foxwood, New Hampshire to Richard and Donna Corbin on August 22, 15 years before the events of the series. -Jonas lived across the street from the wealthy Bernhardt family, and became good friends with their daughter Kiera, who was just a month and 10 days older than him. Their son Adrian also became somewhat of a big-brother figure to Jonas. -When he was three, Jonas taught himself to read. -Shortly after Jonas' eighth birthday and before he started third grade, he and Kiera were climbing trees, and Jonas dared Kiera to climb to a particular branch. The branch broke, and Kiera fell and broke her left arm. Adrian, who was in charge at the time, lashed out at Jonas physically and verbally in a combination of anger and fear. This is why Jonas is afraid of Adrian. As a side note, although Adrian and Kiera have both forgiven Jonas for the accident, he hasn't forgiven himself, which is part of why he's so FINE* (in the Aerosmith sense). -Shortly afterwards, Jonas' parents' divorce was finalized, and he and his mother moved to the other side of town. This meant that he and Adrian would not have a chance to reconcile, nor would he see Kiera recover. To make matters worse, Jonas and Kiera were placed in dfferent classes until seventh grade, and so they grew apart, especially since the Corbins' custody agreement allowed Jonas to only see his father every other weekend, which was also his only opportunity to see the Bernhardt siblings. He was able to sign Kiera's cast, though. -In an interesting coincidence, though, the house that Donna and Jonas moved to was next door to Kiera's best friend Chloe Seaver and her brothers Mark and Justin. Jonas quickly befriended Chloe, and Mark became a new big-brother figure to him, despite being a bit of a bully. -When Jonas was in third grade, the Bernhardts' cat Angel had kittens, and they gave one of them to Jonas, who named him Leo after the constellation because he was going through a space phase at the time. -Despite the divorce being relatively amicable, Jonas still felt lost and insecure, which led him to adopt his class-clown persona. Since it made him popular, he kept it up even after things stabilized. -When Jonas was in fourth grade, he met Brad Thompson, and they became best friends, often having play dates at each other's homes. Brad also befriended Chloe, and the pair became a trio. Jonas also met Brad's sister Mia at this time, but never really knew her well, despite her being only one year his junior. -Sometime around this time, Jonas' father Richard started dating a woman named Monica, who he eventually married, making her Jonas' stepmother. -A year later, when Jonas was in fifth grade, Monica gave birth to his half-sister Samantha, with whom Jonas has always had a complicated relationship - he loves her, but at the same time resents her for stealing his father's affection. -In seventh grade, Jonas and Kiera were placed in the same section, and Jonas officially started crushing on her. -When Jonas was thirteen, Samantha stabbed him in the arm with a fork. To this day, he refuses to sit next to her at meals requiring forks. -The series starts with Jonas as a high school sophomore who's had the good fortune to be assigned the locker next to Kiera's in the same year that Adrian went off to college. *Bleeped-up, insecure, neurotic, and emotional.

Red Hood and the Outlaws stories:
1. “Snowball Effect” - Later, Jason would remember it as one of the best, and worst, weeks of his life. One one hand, Roy and Kori sure showed how much they cared. On the other hand, Jason had found himself in a world of trouble. It had all started with hiding an illness, and it was downhill from there. The Joyfire domestic discipline story that was never meant to get this long, but here we are anyways!

As much as I LOVE Colt and Parker bickering, my troubled heart needs a scene where she is vulnerable or smth and Colt is all protective big bro caring for her💙
Working on getting through my inbox, I'm sorry if anyone feels ignored! Here's a cute little drabble about our favorite sibling duo.
...
Soft, romantic music floats throughout the dim reception hall, the wooden dance floor flooded with couples, all beautiful glow of the fairy lights and Eddison bulbs hung overhead. The wedding is busy, filled to the brim with family and friends, and while laughter echoes throughout the rowdy barn, on the edge of it all sits a girl swathed in candlelit misery. She looked a lot better earlier in the night—before her curls had started to fall out or her mascara had started to smudge in the corners of her eyes—and as she slumps in her seat the tulle of her dress hangs limply against the ground.
Parker is certain that the cousins that had helped her get ready for the wedding would be greatly dismayed by how she's abandoned her lipstick and lost her shoes not even halfway through the night, but as she picks apart a stale bread stick, she's too miserable to care.
It's a happy day.
For everyone, it seems, but Parker.
There's the unmistakable drag of heavy boots on the floor, and before she make a guess at who would join her in her self-isolation, her brother is flopping into the seat beside her with an overdramatic groan. His hair is messy, cheeks ruddy, eyes a bit glazed, but he's recently shaven and smiling; handsome like the rest of those Miami boys, grinning like he's looking for some trouble.
"Bad night?"
"Bad date," she grumbles, eyes drifting to where Jason Anthony—her date, and until today, her hopeful, soon-to-be-boyfriend—was dancing awfully close with one of the groom's distant relatives. She's pretty, in a small pair of high heels that would have Parker eating dust in two shorts steps, and it's obvious that Jason Anthony thinks so two when he whispers something into her ear. "Who goes to a wedding as a plus-one, and ditches their date halfway through the night?"
Colt narrows her gaze for a moment, before he's tossing a toothpick into his mouth with an indifferent shrug. "What? Don't tell me the barf bag over there is your date? I just thought he snuck in with the other party crashers."
Parker scrunches her nose with a glare. "What kind of idiot would gate crash a wedding like this one?" she asks while slumping moodily into her chair.
She loves her cousin, she really does, but this wedding is something straight out of a Stephen King novel. She supposes it's pretty enough, but between the gun-toting Uncles, the miles and miles of nothing but cornfield, and the hooch, any party crasher would have to have some serious balls to come this far out into the middle of nowhere. Just like any date would have to be pretty stupid to risk getting stranded in the middle of nowhere just for the chance to dance with a prettier girl.
Colt loudly slurps down some of his drink, and Parker glares a second time. "And he's—he's not a barf bag."
"Are we talking about the same guy? Bent at five-foot-six, horrible bowl cut from someone that must be half-blind, stringy mustache that makes him look like a pervert?"
"Oh my god, Colt, stop!' she whines, throwing Jason Anthony another look across the crowded dance floor. Though—if she tilts her head a little to the left, she does think his mustache is a bit out of poor taste, and if she squints, she realizes that his hair cut is uneven. Still, she pouts at her brother. "Don't be so rude. He's not that bad. And it's not like we were dating. I guess this whole thing is on me."
He skips over the second half of that statement to shake his head at her, bending an elbow on the table to add, "Not that bad? I think I've seen kindergarteners with more muscle than that twig."
"Colt," she says again, though this time Parker doesn't really care if he stops. Jason Anthony is a skinny guy. "You don't have to do this."
"Do what? Sit here with you? I guess there's better people around to entertain me," he says in total nonchalance, sweeping his gaze over the room as if looking for those people now. But then he spots a particular person on the dance floor, and can't help but add, "you think his date would dance with me if I asked? I bet she would. Probably wants to know what a real muscle feels like, anyway. I might be doing her a kindness if I swoop in now, actually, I swear he gets creepier and creepier by the second."
By the time he finishes, Parker is smiling, and by the time he hops up onto his feet to straighten out his tie, she's giggling so hard her stomach hurts.
"Don't—! Don't—leave them alone!" she cries through a series of choppy breaths, tears brimming at the edges of her eyes. Colt looks all too pleased with himself, and when she struggles to catch her breath, he hangs his palms up into the air as if he was giving up.
"Alright, I'll leave the dip alone. I bet she's a total psycho. Has to be with how bad of a dancer she is. Maybe she'll step on his toes; a little foot bludgeoning never hurt anyone. Not a man, anyway, I don't know what he is."
Parker shook her head at her brother fondly, giggling. "You're ridiculous."
"Ridiculously cool, maybe," he accepts with a shrug. She doesn't correct him; maybe because the older she got, the more Parker thought her brother was ridiculously cool. Even now, at twenty-years old, he had been sneaking her drinks all night despite their mother's strict speech about being on their best behavior before the ceremony started. "Speaking of—I just so happened to notice that there's an empty field up the driveway. Want to go do some donuts?"
"Mom is going to kill you."
"Only if she finds out," he teases, keys swinging on his fingers as he wiggles his eyebrows at her. "And whose gonna tell her? Dipstick over there?"
Jason Anthony was certainly not going to notice. Particularly with how he was in the middle of kissing his dance partner in a way that was not appropriate for an intimate dance like this, and Parker grimaced at the idea of him kissing her like that in front of all those people. Maybe he was a barf bag after all.
Parker grabbed her jacket. "Can I drive?"
"That depends," he asked, suddenly up in her face. "Have you been drinking tonight, miss?"
"Maybe. But, not a lot. Just the two drinks you gave me. And... well, a shot of hooch from Danny. Plus... half of Uncle Jack's drink. But that's it, I swear. I'm not even—I'm only a little tipsy."
Colt arched a brow at her, eyes narrowing even further, and Parker was just on the verge of getting concerned when his face split into a smile. Slinging an arm over her shoulder, he dragged her out the back door. "You promise not to kill me?"
"Well, no one can ever promise that. Not if it's an accident."
"You should really work on your motivational speeches, Park."
"Pinky promise," she said with a giggle, and despite her brother not looking convinced, that was the day he taught his little sister how to do donuts in a muddy field somewhere in backwater Florida just so she wouldn't be so sad.

The Ties that Bind: Master List
Tumblr media
Synopsis: Being the older sister of a literal genius? It’s not easy. Raising said genius from childhood on? An act of love. Uprooting your life again when he gets in over his head? A no brainer. Finding a new family and support system for yourself? Well, you suppose that’s just luck.
AN 1: Shout out to @winterscaptain for letting me borrow her idea of the time line so things don’t have to be so linear. Be sure to check out her amazing series A Joyful Future (Aaron Hotchner x Reader)
AN 2: I will not be doing every episode of the series. That might actually kill me. More than likely I’ll pick the big episodes and then add in other one shot/ happy moments not included in the series. Anything currently listed is planned. More will be added later.
AN 3: If there is no link attached to a title, then that story is going to be written eventually but it’s there for me to plan accordingly :)

Hi! So I had some thoughts about the way abuse has reflected in my writing and I wanted to talk about it. It's actually not going to be a rough, long ramble, because this is still something I can really only talk about with an air of detachment.
There's an offering to an old play of mine I want to do another online reading of later this year, a link to the script if anyone's down. I'm still adding triggers and a read more just so I don't hurt someone. Take care, friends.
So I had the thought recently that, since I'm pretty open about saying that Scott and Edgar are both manifestations of myself, that Edgar's personal history as a child of abuse mirrors my own. And that's actually mostly not true. Genevieve, Edgar's mom, is nothing like my mom. You could say the subtext of his childhood and his relationship with his mom matches my own - what was actually happening instead of what I was conditioned to think was happening.
I was thinking last night if I ever wrote about my own personal abuse in any project. It's something that feels unique and unusual, but I'm actually pretty sure a lot of people will relate to. And then I realize that I actually did! I depicted it pretty on-the-nose in a play I had a reading of in 2020.
Resting Place is a regular-length play that takes place in the Forever Friends Funeral Home. Once led by Joanne Seaver, it is now being run by two of her three children in the wake of her oncoming death. The third and eldest child has come home for the first time in seven years, and things are tense and complicated. There are secrets. People are coping in different ways.
Joanne Seaver is not a perfect depiction of my mother. She is way more eloquent because she's written by me and I'm a good writer. She is depicted, despite being complicated and having MANY faults, as genuinely loving her children to an extent that I'm not really sure my mom was ever capable of. She has the capacity to sort of be a little redeemed and understood, because I don't think I'll ever have the opportunity to redeem and understand my mother.
She is not what a lot of the population think an abusive mother is. Portrayed excessively, she is not supposed to be a figure you can entirely hate. Because if you hate someone you don't have to think about them as often. Acted out, she is meant to be a figure that lingers uncertainly and provokes a lot of different opinions.
This is the most personal play I've ever written. It's a family drama, mainly between the three siblings (I'm the youngest of four) and their dynamics in having to orbit around a sick mother at such a young age. It covers a lot of the grief I had with my own older sister at the time, who left at 18 and was promptly lovingly villianized by my parents for years afterwards.
Most of this cast cried during the reading when we did it. I cried while reading it just now, alone at a cafe. The ultimate fate of the Seaver siblings is way, way more optimistic than the current state of my own siblings. I will probably never see my brothers again and that hurts me every time I think about it.
If you are interested in reading the script, either just to read a script or maybe audition for an online reading sometime this winter, you can do so here. If it provokes a conversation in you, I'm honestly so happy to talk about it. If anyone relates to this I want to hear from you. My DMs are open and I don't even care if we haven't had a conversation before.

The Eliza Ann
The story of the Eliza Ann began two days after Christmas in 1833. On that day, a Bermudian fisherman found what appeared to be an abandoned schooner floating among the reefs near Ely's Harbour. Thinking of a possible salvage and the resulting profit for himself, he rowed out and saw that the bow of the wreck was partially submerged. As he came alongside, the would-be salvor's eagerness turned to horror as his eyes fell on the grotesque figures sprawled on the deck. He called out to them, but there was no reply. Climbing over the side of the wreck, he discovered a crew of skeletons! Full of panic, he jumped into his boat and rowed as fast as he could to Ely's Harbour.

Shipwreck (not the Eliza Ann - Wreck of the “Oregon” under Picklecombe Battery, Plymouth Sound. 1867. Source: Illustrated London News.)
News of his encounter with a "ship full of skeletons" spread quickly throughout the islands. It was not long before a dozen fishing boats set out for the wreck.  Eventually it was towed into the harbour and pulled onto the beach by the authorities for further investigation.  Any sailor could see that the wreck was once a beautiful ship. It must have drifted for many months, for its beams were worm-eaten and rotten. The paint that bore her name had faded.
And everyone wanted to know what had happened to her and her crew. The skeletonised remains were carefully brought ashore and examined for clues by the officials in charge. A chain with a silver medal was found around the neck of one of the victims. The inscription read, "Awarded by the School Board as a reward for services to Wm. Brown, the gift of Franklin".  Underneath were crossed pens over an open book. On one of the skeletons, the name J. Seaver was discovered sewn into the clothing, while another had the name N. Seaver. Investigators suspected that these poor souls must have been Americans, as they had a connection to Franklin.  The papers found in the cabin were damaged and illegible. The ship's cargo included rotten meat and fish as well as sperm candles, cider, brandy and lumber. The barrels containing the beef, pork and mackerel were marked "Boston, September, October and November 1832".
Reports of the discovery of the wreck were published in the local weekly newspaper, the Bermuda Royal Gazette, over the next month. At first, the paper stated succinctly that a wreck of unknown origin had been found on the bottom of the reefs and towed to Ely's Harbour. A week later, on 7 January 1834, the newspaper reported that the wreck had been righted and unloaded and that "some human bones were found in its cabin". On 21 January, the Gazette described the medal found on one of the victims on the wreck and the fact that the names Seaver and Brown were widely used in Massachusetts.  Eventually, news of the disaster reached the United States.
When Bostonians read the local Statesmen on Saturday morning, 8 February 1834, they were shocked by the description of the wreck in Bermuda and the grisly remains on board. The description of the schooner matched that of the Eliza Ann, which was captained by a Captain Brown.  The Eliza Ann belonged to James Brown, a well-known Boston merchant. On board was William Brown, one of the winners of the Boston Franklin Medal of 1829, who wore the silver medal on a chain around his neck. His brother James was also on board. The schooner's captain, Captain Brown, was a nephew of the shipowner, and among the passengers were Joshua Seaver and his brother, which might not have happened if they had travelled separately, which they should never do. Because what does superstition say ? Never serve with siblings on the same ship, it never ends well.
What we know is that the Eliza Ann had sailed from Boston on 11 December 1832 for Puerto Rico, but never arrived. So we know her sad fate, but not what happened on that last voyage, and no one knows to this day.

Curious
What’s the afton family like in your au?
Kinda depends on 'when' you're asking about! But let's vibe!
So first, let's just go into the overall vibe before Evan(Crying Child) died.
The dynamic between the family seemed normal to an extent. There's things that later people would notice about William. But while things were good....
I can't find the post but I compared it to a Criminal Minds character, Ashley Seaver, whose father was a serial killer. The first episode with her is when she's brought in to try and spot the family dynamics that might be present in a family where the dad is.... ya know.
I'm just going to copy her conversation with Prentiss here:
Seaver: "It won't be overt. The kids probably won't be afraid of Dad."
Prentiss: "They won't? These guys have explosive tempers, don't they?"
Seaver: "Definitely. Anger wasn't normal in my house. Usually when it happened, when it exploded, it was an anomaly, a surprise. If anything, my father was overly solicitous. Too nice.
Seaver: "And if I wanted anything... bicycles, toys, dolls... all I had to do was ask.
Seaver: "In groups, he always held my hand. Always. Sometimes so tight, it almost cut off the circulation.
Seaver: "But I can never remember him putting me on his lap, holding me in any way."
Prentiss: "Ashley."
Seaver: "And he'd always have these talks with me. He was terrified someone would take me. Because he knew what was out there."
Prentiss: "Yeah, men like him."
Seaver: "You know, maybe this man recently bought gifts for his kids. My dad used to buy me things all the time."
Prentiss: "What kinds of gifts?"
Seaver: "Anything. Everything. I told you, there was nothing...
Seaver: "My whole life, there was only one thing I wanted that I couldn't have."
Emily: "Which was?"
Seaver: "A pet."
So like. This is the same vibe I carry with the Aftons. William, on the surface, seemed like a good and loving father. He spoiled his kids. He does everything to protect them. There are only a few times where he'll get angry with them or with his wife, and yes he gets very angry when it happens but it's rare enough that you don't think of it.
And they all.... somewhat know. They don't know what they're picking up on. But they know something isn't 'right'. They just can't fathom how 'not right' he is.
This intensified after the first kill of Sammy Emily. Because it's less 'stray but vague dark thoughts' and more 'intentional plans to kill again'. But again, no one really picks up on it because how do you jump to that unless he tells you?
As for the rest of the family's dynamic:
The kids mom, I can't remember if we've given her a name but I"m going with Luara. Anyway. She was a good mom. A good wife. She also loved her kids and filled that strange gap her husband didn't quite cross.
The kids themselves were normal kids. Very. Very normal kids. Near the end of everything, I'll admit Michael was a bit of a bratty older sibling, always pranking Evan for being a crybaby. But like. He's a middleschooler with a very young 'annoying' brother that he's probably stuck babysitting. They did get along other times. Especially when Michael's friends weren't over so he didn't have to be all 'ugh get away from me you baby'.
Then we jump to the immediate aftermath of Evan's death.
William is furious of course. He just lost a son. And some of his feeling is guilt, which he didn't think he'd be able to feel about a child's death but it's his own child that died. And he does shift the blame at Michael. Because Michael has been told that the animatronics can be dangerous. He was old enough to know that someone could get hurt!
Laura is............. in a similar boat. She's holding it together better. She doesn't want to blame her husband or her eldest son. But she does.
Michael just kinda. He's definitely shut down for a lot of this time. Guild and trauma just.... it's fucked. Doesn't help that nightmares start and the only ones who try to comfort him are the ones who clearly blame him.
Elizabeth is.... an oddity here. She's old enough to understand that Evan is gone and not coming back. But she's still young enough that the grief isn't quite as hard hitting. She also doesn't quite blame anyone because she has a simpler 'it was an accident. It happened' look. Not in a cold way, but just in a kid way.
This leads into Elizabeth feeling lonely and neglected by everyone else, so she sneaks into her father's lab and... well. Circus Baby happens.
Now. William is the only one who knows she died. Michael and Laura think that she must've run away. They are similarly distraught about it.
William knows that it was more directly his fault. He made an animatronic to kill children. He kept it in a place the kids could get to it. He took his eyes off her for just a moment....
And since his guilt turns to blame, he ends up blaming Michael and his friends for this too. Because if they hadn't killed Evan....
This is where he properly cracks and goes from making plans to kill kids to actually killing kids. Killing Michael's three friends and stuffing them in the suits of their 'favorite' animatronics. When more kids go missing, Laura and Michael and the whole town actually think that Elizabeth was probably the first victim of whoever this was(technically...)
But despite his rage, he does still love Michael. So he doesn't hurt him. Not directly. But the two other victims speak volumes of his blame.
One was Cassidy. She was a girl who Michael was friends with. A middle school crush, really. She wasn't involved in the event with Evan. But she was involved with Michael.
The second was Michael Brooks. Now, Michael Afton and Michael Brooks had no real connection, the latter being a few years younger even. But. The fact that William chose a child with the same name as his own, a child very similar to his own in other ways......
After it's revealed that William is the one who killed those kids, Laura is horrified. How didn't she know? How could she have loved him? So on and so forth. She brings all that guilt onto herself.
Her feelings toward Michael are.... complicated. She loves him, very much. She blames him a bit less, knowing this was more William's fault than his. But she is scared. She doesn't know if he's... like William was. So after the two of them leave Hurricane together, she's a weird sort of overprotective and hovering. Trying to make up for past mistakes by making sure it doesn't repeat.
Michael takes this as more guilt.
